Turn fire-season garden preparation into a clear maintenance brief
Research-backed editorial guidance. Any examples are illustrative.
Editorial research guidance, checked 11 October 2026. This is a booking and planning checklist based on CFA and other official guidance. Property maintenance can reduce risk, but it cannot guarantee that a home or its occupants will be safe during a bushfire.
Begin with an inspection from places you can access safely. Note grass condition, accumulated leaves and branches, gutter debris and existing piles of garden waste. CFA includes these matters in seasonal property preparation. Make a list of observed tasks rather than asking a business to “make the property fireproof”. That promise would be misleading and would leave the actual maintenance scope unclear.
Separate work you want completed now from work that needs ongoing attention. A cleanup is a point-in-time service; leaves and vegetation can accumulate again. Ask the contractor what it will inspect, what it will remove and what condition it will leave behind. Request a description that you can compare with the property afterward, without inventing a universal maintenance interval for every site.
Include the end of the waste journey in the brief. CFA warns against leaving green-waste piles near a home as warmer weather approaches. Ask whether the booking includes collection, loading and removal, or whether those are separate tasks. Identify the proposed destination and confirm that it accepts the material and quantity. Do not assume every council facility has the same arrangements.
Hypothetical example: a resident notices leaf buildup around the garden and plans to book pruning. The resident asks for two clearly described outcomes: the agreed pruning and removal of the resulting waste. They also ask whether existing loose debris is included. The example is a way to avoid a scope misunderstanding, not a record of an owner's job or a prescribed fire-management plan.
Check permissions before changing vegetation. CFA's garden guidance directs residents to check vegetation-clearing rules. A contractor's availability does not establish permission to remove a tree or other vegetation. Where the rules or the plant's condition are unclear, seek the relevant council or qualified specialist advice before adding removal to the booking. Distinguish ordinary garden work from specialist tree work.
Gutters create a separate access conversation. Ask how the contractor will assess work at height and what equipment or arrangements the job requires. WorkSafe's falls-prevention checklist covers construction risks involving roofs, ladders and other access systems. This article does not provide a safe method for your roof or recommend climbing a ladder. Describe the building and access constraints so a competent person can assess them.
Before the work day, check current CFA information for the property's actual fire district. Fire Danger Period restrictions and Total Fire Bans are different concepts, and a general seasonal checklist cannot establish whether a particular activity is permitted that day. Ask the provider how it handles conditions that require a change or postponement. Avoid treating a months-old screenshot as current permission.
Include household practicalities. Agree gate access, parking, working areas and how pets will be kept clear of equipment. If hot weather is expected, plan pet water, shade and a cool ventilated place using Agriculture Victoria's guidance. Arrange an alternative booking if necessary rather than assuming every planned task must go ahead regardless of conditions.
Keep the agreed task list and check completion against it. Record any remaining work, including waste awaiting collection or an item referred to a specialist. Use CFA's current preparation and emergency-planning information alongside maintenance decisions. A clear service brief helps organise practical work; it is only one part of preparing for the season.
